Bidfood expands its Open Doors initiative, integrating eight new smaller food and beverage companies to support emerging brands, boost local sourcing, and strengthen its sustainability and diversity efforts in the foodservice sector.

Bidfood has expanded its Open Doors programme, adding eight new suppliers to bring the total roster to 23 smaller food and beverage companies. Launched in 2023, the initiative aims to support emerging businesses by offering them a platform to establish themselves in the wholesale market, reflecting Bidfood’s broader commitment to fostering innovation and diversity within the foodservice sector.

The latest suppliers joining the programme include Icesupp, Wibble, Wildthingz, Howies Cider, CBD One, Kwerky, IBIS Rice, and Northern Pasta. These additions complement the initial seven brands that were part of the first cohort, which featured innovative companies such as Bio&Me, Boundless, Flawsome!, Ninju, OGGS, TeaJoy, and TRIBE. These earlier listings brought a variety of forward-thinking products to the market, from gut health-focused porridges and allergen-free snacks to vegan alternatives to eggs, illustrating Bidfood’s focus on nurturing a diverse range of food innovations.

According to the original announcement, the Open Doors programme exemplifies Bidfood’s dedication to giving smaller, innovative suppliers a chance to scale their businesses and gain better access to foodservice buyers. The programme also aligns with wider industry trends emphasizing sustainability, diversity, and health-conscious product offerings. By integrating these smaller suppliers, Bidfood strengthens its portfolio with distinctive, often locally sourced or niche items that appeal to evolving customer demands.

Supporting local producers is a key part of Bidfood’s strategy beyond the Open Doors initiative. For instance, Bidfood Scotland recently launched a specialised section on its online platform, Bidfood Direct, which is dedicated to showcasing Scottish produce, including fish, meat, dairy, bakery, and beverages. This effort aims to boost the profile of local suppliers and provide chefs and caterers with a convenient route to access high-quality regional products.

Furthering its commitment to efficient service and sustainability, Bidfood is also expanding its physical footprint with two new depots in Glasgow and Bedford in 2023. These state-of-the-art facilities will enhance service quality while supporting the company’s objective to reduce its carbon footprint, underlining the company’s holistic approach to growth that includes both supplier innovation and operational responsibility.

Through initiatives like Open Doors and investments in infrastructure and digital platforms, Bidfood is positioning itself as a champion of smaller food businesses, innovation, and local sourcing within the competitive foodservice industry.
